Junior Sailing
Since 1969, the Junior Sailing program at The Nyack Boat Club has trained generations of
young people to sail. The program emphasizes not only nautical skills, but also safety,
responsibility, and personal achievement, instilling values that extend far beyond sailing. The
program welcomes both Nyack Boat Club members and children in the community to
participate in two four-week sessions.
Our mission is to support the development of junior sailors ages 8-16 years through
recreational sailing and sailboat racing by advancing seamanship, navigation skills, and
fostering a lifelong passion for sailing. Many advanced junior sailors have raced in regattas
around the region, and some have even gone on to compete at the collegiate level. All of our
instructors are USSA-certified and follow strict safety guidelines developed by the club’s
board, the Junior Sailing Association of Long Island Sound, the U.S. Sailing Association, and
the U.S. Optimist Dinghy Association. Junior sailors attending the program sail and race
Optimists and 420's. Although club member families may use their own qualified boats, the
program provides well-maintained boats for all others.
