Mooring Committee Guidelines

The following are the Mooring Committee request and requirment guidlines.

Requests:
There are typically three types of mooring committee requests members can make:

  • a request to move you mooring
  • a request to lift and remove your mooring
  • a request to place a mooring.

Moving - All requests to move your mooring are made through a google move request form that is distributed each year in February or March. Completion of this form is required to be considered for a move. Other requirements are detailed on the form. Requirements include that you are able and willing to be present on the move date to manage your gear.

Lifts - Throughout the season members can make requests for the MC to lift your mooring. We do not at this time have a formal request form to do this, contacting the committee chair by email will suffice, for now. Know that the MC has continued to maintain the old cow equipped with a chain-fall for members to lift moorings at their will. Please only make requests for the MC to lift your mooring with the new/blue cow if you fall into the following categories, otherwise the MC is likely not to honor the request.

Valid reasons to request a mooring lift:

  • You are upgrading your mooring anchor from a mushroom to a Dor Mor or to a larger Dor Mor.
  • You have inspected and it has been determine that you need to change your bottom chain.
  • You have a mushroom with a wrap, you have tried to lift your mooring with the chain-fall and for some reason were unable to do it. If you had to pull your mooring to get out a wrap, bring the mooring back to the bulk head and make a request for the MC to re-position your mooring in the field.
  • You have a mushroom and several years have gone by and you need to inspect the bottom shackle.
  • You are leaving the club, or no longer paying for the mooring.

Invalid reasons to request a mooring lift:

  • You desire to store your mooring on land for the winter - Moorings are to stored in the water properly winterized. We recommend you tie to a neighbor and have a stick for the tied group. Pulling too many moorings for the winter will over burden the MC come Spring to place moorings while other work needs to be done.
  • You need to change your top chain -  top chain can be easily changed out using the woody with the side hoist (this is what the boat was built for), or with the old cow. The old cow gives you a nice surface to work on.
  • You need to inspect your chains - chains can be pulled up to inspect the top and most of your bottom chain. The last 15 feet of bottom chain is not going to be much different than the 20 or 25 feet you can pull up on the cow or in the woody.
  • Any other reason than that mentioned above.

Drops - The MC has taken charge of accurately dropping all moorings in the field. Please let us know if you have a mooring that needs to be dropped.

Other requirements:
Any time the MC is going to lift, drop or move a member's mooring the member must be present on the cow to handle moving around the chain. It is inappropriate for the MC to handle your mooring otherwise. During Covid we have volunteered to do this work at times without members present. This is our prerogative but does not create a new policy. If we go out on the cow without a member the member must be on land to load or unload the mooring.

This is a do-it-yourself club that relies on member labor to keep costs down. Members are responsible for their moorings, making sure they are maintained, safe using appropriate grade chain and gear, built well, and with wired shackles. The MC is not a paid service organization, we are members like you, volunteering our time.

In addition, if you are a new member or just never learned how to properly build your mooring let us know, we can provide instruction and help. We will also provide instruction on how to use the cow with the chain-fall.
